The Big Creek & Southern Railroad

The Big Creek & Southern is a private 7-1/2 inch gauge railroad situated on a 13.3 acre tract of former farm land and is devoted to having fun with riding scale trains. In 1993 Pat McCarthy founded the BC&S. Construction of the railroad commenced in 1994. In 2024 the railroad was purchased by active model railroader Doug Price who continues the traditions of the BC&S with Pat.

Fellow Railroaders Welcome

We are located 40 miles southeast of Kansas City, about midway between Lees Summit and Harrisonville, Missouri. We have a monthly run day the fourth Saturday of each month and any persons interested in or already involved in the live steam railroading hobby are welcome to come and run with us. If you live within an hour’s drive of the railroad and want to operate with us, we ask that you participate as much as possible in our work days (Saturdays from April through November, weather permitting). If you have not operated with us previously, we ask that you please contact us by email before coming for the first time.

Regrettably, due to the high cost of liability insurance, the Big Creek & Southern is not open to the general public and we do not offer train rides nor host parties for the general public. For these things we endorse and highly recommend the Kansas City Northern Railroad located at Line Creek Park at 60th Street and N.W. Waukomis Drive (one mile north of I-29 at Waukomis Drive) in Kansas City’s Northland and invite you to contact them for your special group or train party needs.

Regular Events on the BC&S

  • We have open “run day” the 4th Saturday of every month.

In addition, each year we host two special operating events

  • Car Card Operations and Open Running (2nd week in June)
  • Car Card Operations and Open Running – including long-train running (4th week of September)

Please explore our website to learn more about our railroad.

Better yet, email us and schedule a visit! Be careful, though. You might just get hooked!
